How long does tooth whitening last?

Teeth whitening or beaching will last different amounts of time depending on each individual patient. Exposure to foods, drinks (especially coffee, tea and red wines), smoking etc will gradually stain teeth over time. You may want to periodically bleach your teeth. After an initial treatment, most people do touch ups about once every 12 months to  2 years.

Can Teeth Whitening turn my fillings and crowns white too?

No, the whitening procedure will have no impact on the colour of existing fillings, dental crowns and veneers.  That is why we recommend bleaching or whitening treatments prior to getting veneers so that the colour matching is optimal.

Old amalgam (silver) fillings can be replaced with new white resin fillings.

This is also another quick and affordable way to improve your smile with noticeable results.

Please refer to “White fillings” under services.

Teeth Whitening is not recommended for :

Pregnant or nursing mothers
Children under 16 years
If you have periodontal disease including gingivitis or gums in poor condition
If you have recently had oral surgery
People with decaying teeth or exposed roots
People with open cavities
People with a history of allergic reactions to peroxide products

How does the teeth whitening process work?

Following a consultation for suitability for teeth whitening.  We will make you two custom fit trays that perfectly fit your individual teeth. The fit of the tray is critical to success of treatment.  Impressions are made by the dentist. Accurate models of your teeth are obtained from which custom fitting whitening trays can be made.

Then over a period of about 10 days to two weeks a whitening gel is placed in trays that fit over your teeth.  With the gel inside the tray you simply place the trays in your mouth for about 45min to an hour each day. You can sit back and watch your favourite show while your smile is getting brighter.

As the active ingredient in the gel, carbamide peroxide, is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and bleaches the colored substances. The structure of the tooth is not changed; only the tooth is made lighter and whiter. Fillings, Crowns, and Bonding will not lighten.

Why use the Tray Teeth Whitening method?

Tray Teeth Whitening procedures have been common in dentistry since the late 1980’s.  The procedure typically takes about 1-14 days to complete.  Side effects are minimal.   The most common side effect is tooth increased sensitivity particularly to cold.  These symptoms usually go away when whitening is discontinued.  Tray Tooth whitening is safe and one of the most conservative dental cosmetic procedures.
